Your dog must be tattooed (obligatory since January 1992). It is the
only guarantee in the event of loss. Do not forget to take along with
you the notebook of vaccination and the chart of tattooing.
Buy a tube of identity or a medal which you will hang to the
collar of the dog, with the vacation address.
Check your insurance company.
Your dog has to be up to date in its inoculations (the antirabic vaccine is not compulsory in France but it will be required in campsites and vacation centres; on the other hand it is compulsory to travel abroad).
Caution:
anti-rabic firstly-vaccination is valid one month after the
injection, and during one year, day for day. The vaccination of
recall is carried out before the expiry of the period of validity.
This vaccine is immediately valid and during one year. If the deadline is exceeded, it will be
necessary to carry out a new firstly-vaccination.
To travel in all the European Union, your dog has to possess a passport that your veterinarian will establish you.
TRAIN
It is never free for our friends, even for smallest.
AIR
The small animals remain with their Masters in a bag, with a light additional charge. The others are constrained to travel in the compartment, after the purchase of a cage (obligatory).
BOAT
Normally, the dogs must travel in kennels. There are however tolerances, especially for the small animals, so that they remain in cabin. The tariffs are very variable.
Preferably, the dog must be with the back of the vehicle but
not on the back beach. If it is sick in the car, your
veterinary surgeon will prescribe a drug to it. Do not let it pass
the head by the window while rolling (risk of conjunctivitis and
otitis). Carry out stops every two hours and make drink it because the dehydration is very fast in
the car.
Never leave it in a vehicle with the stop, on the one hand because it
can be stolen, with or without the car, on the other hand because in
full sun, the temperature can reach 50 quickly or 60°. The animal
risks death; and do not forget, a car parked in the shade will not
remain it a long time...
A halt ? All the hotels are not very accessible
for the animals, better is to consult a guide.
Beaches access is often interdict with the dogs. And in
any event, it is not the ideal (an prolonged exposure to the sun can
involve lesions, with crust and ulceration).
To drink sea water gives the diarrhoea. After a sea bathing, it is
absolutely necessary to rinse the dog with fresh water. Sand can
irritate the eyes and be placed in the bearings.
MOUNTAIN
Here already more pleasant holidays for the dog, at least in
summer! Protect its bearings by rubbing its with a pomade which will
harden its, in the event of excursion. Of course, do not
over-estimate the sporting capacities of your dog!
Avoid letting it bathe or drinking in the torrents because water is too
cold. The young or old animals often suffer from altitude, and
those which have cardiac or respiratory problems.
COUNTRYSIDE
Ideal holidays! See each day that graminaceous do not thread in its nostrils (sneezes), ears or under the skin (blisters and licking). Same for the ticks and other parasites.
Your animal will not always easily find the way of its vacation. Better is not to wait. Telephone to the police stations, to the firemen, to the veterinary surgeons, the local animal organizations.
Before, check that your dog has all the required vaccines by the host country (embassies and consulates will be able to inform you).
The ideal is of being able to leave it at home with a
known person. Thus, the animal will suffer less your absence, and its
small practices will be preserved.
If you don’t know a available person to settle at home during
your absence, there are guard services in residence but the cost
can appear high to you.
Another possibility, to leave it in parents or friends who well know it.
There also exists of many pensions. It is preferable to visit them
before holding, and without preventing, because best and worst is
found. The prices go from simple to the double, even more...
Always, do not forget to leave to the person responsible for
your animal its tattooing card, its vaccination notebook, where
she will be able to join to you, number phone of your veterinary
surgeon and so on.
